SCHOLARSHIPS for the
CHILDREN of U.S. SPECIAL OPERATIONS MEMBERS

In the spring of 2015 this scholarship program in cooperation with the Navy Seal Museum Foundation and the Unit Scholarship Fund was created to honor my parents: CWO4 Ernest L. Hale (30 years USAF) and Gisela Hale (PhD in German Studies). To date over $507,500. in scholarships have been awarded.

The Ernest and Gisela Hale Scholarships for the Children of U.S. Special Forces Members in Cooperation with the Navy Seal Museum Foundation and the Army Unit Scholarship Fund
This program is dedicated to my parents, CWO4 Ernest and Gisela Hale. Gisela grew up as a German civilian child during WWII surviving the Allied bombings and eating what her family could find to stay alive. After the war she went to work for the American military in a secretarial capacity. Everything she earned went to send her older brother to university. When she married my father, CWO4 Ernest L. Hale (veteran of WWII, Korea and Vietnam), she followed him around the world for his military tours and doggedly pursued her own higher education culminating in a PhD from Boston College. Both of my parents are now buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

I believe that offering a scholarship in their names is a fitting way to honor their dedication to serving one's country and to the pursuit of education against the odds. By making this funding available, we hope to say thank you in a small way to those military families of Special Forces Members that have given so very much to us all.

TECHNICAL AND TRADE SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP (TTSS)

The Marlee Foundation recognizes that in our country today there is significant need for professionally trained individuals of all kinds.  Not every person has to have a college degree to contribute to society and earn a good living for his or her family.  We all need plumbers, airplane/auto mechanics, electricians, HVAC specialists, drafts-people, etc. and they need to be good at their job and to do that they need training.  This is the second year we will open a scholarship program for the children of US Special Forces members who wish to pursue a formal, specific degree from a Trade or Technical school.

By making this funding available, we hope to say thank you in a small way to those military families of Special Forces Members that have given so very much to us all.

THE TOM SELLEW S.T.E.M. SCHOLARSHIP (TSSTEM)

Picture
The Tom Sellew - S.T.E.M. Scholarship for the Children of U.S. Special Forces Members in Cooperation with the Navy Seal Museum Foundation and the Army Unit Scholarship Fund
This special program is dedicated to Tom Sellew, one of my dear AJA International, Inc. employees and my friend who passed away unexpectedly in October of 2018.  Tom worked at my company for 12 years before retiring in June 2018. He also worked nights for 35+ years at the Boston Garden (old and new).  He secured a team signed Boston Bruins hockey stick for the son of Ty Woods (one of the heroes we lost in Benghazi).  He loved his Red Sox, his music, life and his dear wife Diane. At his retirement party, Tom told us the story of how he was given away as a baby and had just discovered his two long lost brothers that spring at age 67!  The story had us all a little weepy.  Since the Kleenex supply was limited, I am happy we also roasted him a bit as he had a great sense of humor.  Working at an R&D equipment manufacturing company, Tom always loved the sciences and he was a great contributor in our electrical engineering and custom manufacturing area. At our annual company Halloween costume event, Tom often dressed as Uncle Sam.  He was a great patriot and he would be very proud of this legacy.

At his passing, Diane requested that Tom’s friends and loved ones make a donation to the Marlee foundation for a special S.T.E.M. scholarship in lieu of flowers.  I was so moved by her kindness I agreed to match all donations in his name.  The generosity of these donors was magnificent and in total we have gathered another $15,400. in scholarship donations.  We will all miss you Tom, “shine on” my brother.

Why the the children of Special Operations members?

In today's increasingly unstable world, their parents are typically the first responders to dangerous international situations. The sacrifices these individuals and their families are required to make deserve recognition and justify additional support from those they are helping to protect. For a Special Operations family, "having your kids end up OK" is much more challenging when one or more parents are deployed, preparing for deployment or even upon returning from deployment.
